FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (February 6, 2020) – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team resumes spring season play this Friday at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center in Tucson versus Arizona at 3 p.m.
"We just spent almost three weeks at home and we are very eager to compete again," said head coach
Ewa Bogusz. "Everyone is taking small but steady steps forward and this match will be a great chance for us to show that. We can't wait to get back on the road."
The Lumberjacks have been idle from competition since a 5-2 dual-opening loss to Arizona State on Jan. 19. Previously, NAU competed at the Weinman Foundation Invitational hosted by Hawai'i to begin the spring season.
In last month's match versus the Sun Devils, the 'Jacks claimed two singles wins from senior
Chiara Tomasetti and sophomore
Emilie Haakansson at the No. 1 and No. 4 spots. NAU also played Arizona State tough in doubles before surrendering the doubles point.
Tomasetti was dominant against then-ranked No. 41 Ilze Hattingh on court one where she posted a 6-2, 6-1 straight-set victory, which earned her Big Sky Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors. Tomasetti, ranked No. 47 nationally in the latest poll released on Wednesday, is tied with freshman
Mimi Bland with two singles wins this spring. Bland recorded both of her singles wins in Hawaii.
While Tomasetti made quick work of Hattingh, Haakansson needed three sets to pick up her first dual match win of the season. Haakansson rallied from a set down to ultimately win in a tiebreaker, 6-7, 6-4, 11-9 against Arizona State's Cali Jankowski on court four.
Although NAU dropped the doubles point, the Lumberjacks No. 2 and 3 pairs went down to the wire against their Sun Devil counterparts. Tomasetti and junior
Ellie Millard were tied at 6-6 and went unfinished on court two when Arizona State clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win at No. 3 where Haakansson and freshman
Elinor Beazley fell narrowly.
Despite their loss at No. 1 doubles versus Arizona State, sophomore
Adrianna Sosnowska and Bland still hold an overall combined record of 12-4 between the fall and spring seasons.
The Lumberjacks claimed the doubles point and received a win by Tomasetti at No. 1 singles in last season's 5-2 loss to Arizona. NAU has not defeated its Pac-12 rival from Tucson in 35 all-time matchups.
The Wildcats are 1-2 in dual matches this spring having played against three nationally-ranked opponents. Arizona, who was 12-12 overall and 2-8 in the Pac-12 last season, blanked No. 52 UNLV, 4-0, on Jan. 26 after opening the spring with losses to No. 18 Texas A&M and No. 46 Arkansas.
Arizona's Talya Zandberg has compiled a 2-1 record at No. 1 singles for the Wildcats this spring tying her for the team-lead in dual singles wins with Khim Iglupas, who has split time at No. 3 and No. 4.
Zandberg and Abby Amos makes up Arizona's No. 3 doubles team, who has totaled a team-best 2-1 doubles record in dual matches.
