LAS VEGAS, Nev. (April 17, 2021) - Day two of the UNLV Silver State Classic is a wrap for the Northern Arizona throws team; all Lumberjacks who competed finished within the top-eight slots in their respective events for the second consecutive day.
After a triumphant performance yesterday, senior Parker Joens delivered again on Saturday.
Joens placed first in the men's discus after throwing a personal best mark of 56.34 meters, and breaking yet another UNLV Myron Partridge Stadium facility record; Joens' mark currently maintains his second place spot in the Big Sky and 25th in the NCAA.
Freshmen Jay Nielsen (52.94m), CJ McMullen (51.07m) and Rudy Tapia (50.72m), along with senior Nick Coghill (50.21m) rounded out the top-seven places at the meet. Nielsen, McMullen, Tapia, and Coghill currently hold the third, sixth, seventh, and eight places in the conference.
The women's discus featured a dominant performance by junior Matile Roe and freshman Carly Watts.
Roe championed the event with a personal best mark of 54.85 meters earning the top slot in the league so far this season and the 22nd best throw in the nation right now.
Watts finished directly behind with a personal best throw of 47.83 meters, landing her fourth on the Big Sky leaderboard.
Next, Lumberjack freshmen Trevor Hook and Clayton Zupke competed in the men's javelin.
Hook threw a personal best of 57.23 to place third overall while Zupke finished fifth with a mark of 54.80 meters.
NAU had a sequence of strong performances this weekend, and will compete again at USATF Grad Prix At Oregon Relays and the Canyon Invitational next weekend.
