FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (October 11, 2022) – Northern Arizona's fall schedule continues this week as the Lumberjacks return to Las Vegas, Nev. for the 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Mountain Region Championships hosted by UNLV.
Beginning on Wednesday and running through Sunday, it will be the fourth straight edition of Mountain Regionals to be hosted by the Rebels at the Fertitta Tennis Complex, with 12 courts hosting the singles and doubles tournaments. Play begins on Wednesday with the first round of doubles at 9 a.m. followed by the first round of both singles flights.
Play continues Thursday with the second round of doubles play, as well as two rounds in singles, with Friday holding the Round of 16 and quarterfinals for doubles in addition to the quarterfinals for singles. Semifinals for both singles and doubles will be played on Saturday with the finals set for Sunday, while additional matches begin on Friday, Saturday and possibly Sunday.
Northern Arizona finished the 2021-22 season ranked No. 8 in the region and will take on athletes from 18 schools from across the Western United States. In addition to a pair of Power Five programs in Colorado and Utah, the region includes multiple Mountain West teams, Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Nevada, New Mexico, UNLV, Utah State and Wyoming. Five others from the Big Sky Conference are also among the Mountain Region, with Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State and Weber State scheduled to join Northern Arizona in Las Vegas. The remaining three schools include BYU of the WCC, Denver of the Summit League and Utah Tech from the WAC.
The Lumberjacks last played at the Tulsa Invite a little more than two weeks ago, facing off with players from the Golden Hurricane, Arkansas Razorbacks, Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and Wichita State Shockers.
Ana Karen Guadiana Campos finished with a perfect 3-0 record in her first action as a Lumberjack, followed by freshman
Daryna Shoshyna's 2-0 record and All-Big Sky First Team selection
Sofia Markova's 2-1 record. Markova and Shoshyna combined for a 2-1 mark in doubles in Tulsa, with the pairing scheduled to continue this week in Las Vegas.
In addition to Guadiana Campos, Shoshyna and Markova,
Elinor Beazley,
Laura Duhl,
Ava Neyestani and
Patrycja Niewiadomska will compete for the Lumberjacks this week. Guadiana Campos and Duhl will pair together while Beazley and Neyestani will make up the third team.
All seven players will compete in the two draws scheduled for singles play.
Last fall, Beazley and Duhl finished with 2-1 records in singles at the Mountain Regionals while combining for a 2-1 record in doubles as a pairing.
