FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (September 18, 2022) - The Lumberjacks opened up their fall tournament slate with success at the Wildcat Invite in Tucson this weekend.
The tournament began Friday and wrapped up today as NAU tennis heads back to Flagstaff with some wins and momentum as they continue fall play.
NAU pulled out three first-round doubles wins on Friday, with a few new pairings in the mix. For their first matchup together as a doubles pairing, Dominik Buzonics and Piotr Galus earned the 6-4 win to New Mexico's Alexander Maggs and Jan Pucalka. Buzonics and Galus fell in the semifinals of the Wildcat draw to Arizona's Eric Padgham and Jay Friend.
Facundo Tumosa and Maikel De Boes secured the 6-3 victory to New Mexico State's Roko Stipetic and Corey Clarke before dropping a 6-0 straight set to Gonzaga's Matthew Hollingworth and Sasha Trkulja in the semifinals.
Maciej Ziomber and Alex Groves paired up against Gonzaga's Pablo Gomez Galvan and Martin Bats, winning the match after Gonzaga's duo retired the match due to injury. Ziomber and Groves earned the 6-3 victory in the quarterfinals to New Mexico's Georgia Samaha and Daniil Kakhniuk. NAU's pairing dropped a 6-3 semifinals set to Arizona's Dominique Rolland and Jared Horwood.
Dani Torres made an impressive run in singles play, as he was crowned champion on the black draw after a first-round bye and three straight wins. Torres earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory facing New Mexico State's Ryan Ford, a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win to New Mexico's Daniil Kakhniuk, and went on to win the finals in a 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-2 win to New Mexico's Alexander Maggs.
Groves brought in two impressive singles wins in the white draw, earning the 6-3, 6-2 victory to San Diego State's Liam Spiers and a 6-3, 7-5 win to Gonzaga's Gomez Galvan in the semifinals.
In his Lumberjack debut, De Boes played in the red draw, securing NAU's second tournament draw win. De Boes earned the 6-2, 6-4 win to Grand Canyon's Loic Van Zeggelaar, followed by a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 win to New Mexico State's Itay Feigin, and a finals win to Gonzaga's Leon Roider with a 6-2, 6-3 match.
Galus claimed a 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 quarterfinals win in the grey draw to GCU's Jonathan Da Silva before dropping a 6-1, 4-6, 6-7 (4-6) match to Gonzaga's Hollingworth.
