FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (September 22, 2022) - The stage is all set for NAU swimming and diving's 27th annual pentathlon.
NAU is preparing for it's 40th season of competition in swimming and diving, looking to put the stamp on a decade of Western Athletic Conference championships as the team is coming off nine consecutive titles.
Friday's pentathlon will begin at 2 p.m. MST in the Wall Aquatic Center. The Pentathlon features five events, the 200m individual medley, 100m butterfly, 100m backstroke, 100m breaststroke and 100m freestyle. Each swimmer is awarded points based on their times in each event, the winner of the Pentathlon is crowned after determining who has the highest cumulative total.Â
Senior Haley Mayhew will compete in her last pentathlon after placing second last year with 3,320 points. Behind Mayhew was Abigail Tashlein in third place, and Jamie Dellwardt in fourth place.
The Pentathlon is a yearly meet for NAU that plays a big role in preparing the team for teams they will face in the upcoming season. It is also time for the coaches and swimmers to evaluate where they are overall, allowing time for adjustments and improvements before seeing competition in season.
Delaney Phillips had a first place finish in the 100m breaststroke last year with a time of 1:14.83. Tashlein earned a first place finish in the 100m backstroke, with a time of 1:09.50, leading her to her third place finish.
The Lumberjacks head into the Pentathlon one month ahead of their first official meet. NAU will host Ottawa University, as well as Arizona Christian and Idaho, on October 21st to kick off the competitive slate of the 2022-23 season for swimming and diving.
