FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (February 8, 2023) – Following a weekend in which she went 4-2, and earning the Lumberjacks only win against the University of Arizona,
Daryna Shoshyna earned the title of Big Sky's Women's Tennis Co-Player of the Week.
In her first doubles match of the weekend, Shoshyna paired with
Elinor Beazley, easily beating the duo from Florida Atlantic 6-2.
Shoshyna and Beazley continued their success into Saturday, with a decisive 6-4 victory against Fresno State. In her first singles match of the day, she narrowly lost the first set 6-7 but easily came back to win the match and clinch the victory over FSU.
Shoshyna accounted for the Lumberjacks' only win against Arizona, finishing her singles match with a decisive victory over Belen Nevenhoven. She won the match in two sets with a score of 6-4, 6-1. Shoshyna is 5-4 on the season and has proved to be an important asset to the NAU team.
This is the freshman's first Big Sky Women's Tennis Player of the Week honor and is the second time this season that a Lumberjack has earned the title.
Sofia Markova was named Player of the Week a week ago, following a dominant performance against Grand Canyon University.
Northern Arizona has two weeks off before they will hit the road once again to conclude their five-match road trip. They will play against UTEP in El Paso, Texas on Saturday, Feb. 18, then travel to Las Cruses, New Mexico to take on New Mexico State on Sunday, Feb. 19.
