FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (March 1, 2023) – Following a historic weekend for the Northern Arizona University women's tennis team, which saw them defeat No. 53 Colorado State to earn their highest ITA National Ranking in school history,
Patrycja Niewiadomska has been named the Big Sky Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
Niewiadomska was an integral part in each 4-3 victory last weekend, which saw NAU extend their home match win streak to 26 matches. She paired up with
Laura Duhl for doubles, easily defeating the Weber State pair 6-2 to help earn the first point of the match.
Playing at the number three position against both Weber State and Colorado State, both of Niewiadomska's matches were tough battles. Against WSU she won the first set 6-4 before dopping the second 3-6. A back-and-forth third set led to a tiebreaker which she won 7-6.
The next day against CSU, Niewiadomska did not have any easier a path to victory. Both of her sets went to a tiebreaker, with Niewiadomska eventually emerging with the win. She won the first set 7-5 before winning a long second set 7-6.
This is the freshman's first Big Sky Women's Tennis Player of the Week honor and is the third time this season that a Lumberjack has earned the title. Both
Sofia Markova and
Daryna Shoshyna have been named Player of the Week this season, following strong performances from each.
The Lumberjacks are back on the road this weekend, heading to Oregon for matches against Portland and Portland State. They will fist face Portland on Friday, Mar. 3 at 10:00 a.m. MST and will face Portland State the next day at 11:00 a.m. MST.
