Both NAU Tennis Teams Ranked for First Time in Program History

TEMPE, Ariz. (March 7, 2023) - For the first time in program history, both the NAU Men's and Women's tennis teams have been nationally ranked by the ITA at the same time.

This morning the ITA announced NAU Men's Tennis as the No. 75 team in the nation after an impressive weekend in Tucson where the Jacks put up a solid battle against the No. 17 Arizona in a 4-1 loss, before going on to claim victory over No. 66 Gonzaga in a 4-3 match.

The ITA ranking comes as the third in Men's Tennis program history at NAU, as the Jacks picked up the first and second last season. The Jacks will be returning to Flagstaff for the first time in over a month, to host Air Force at home on Friday, March 10 at 4 p.m. MST.

The ITA honors come just after NAU's back-to-back Big Sky player of the week accolades from Facundo Tumosa and Maikel De Boes as the Jacks improved to 9-2 on the season this past weekend.

The Northern Arizona University women's tennis team is now ranked 63rd in the nation following a road weekend which saw them earn their second conference victory of the season.

The women defeated Portland State 5-2 in their first road conference victory of the season. All five points came from singles victories, with Sofia Markova, Patrycja Niewiadomska, Daryna Shoshyna, Ana Neyestani, and Laura Duhl each defeating their opponents. With this victory, the Lumberjacks improved to 6-4 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.

Last week NAU was ranked at number 52, their highest ranking in school history. The previous week they were ranked 71st. Before this season, the last time the Lumberjacks were ranked was during the 2008-09 season when they were ranked number 72.

The ITA posted their eighth computer Top 75 women's rankings of the season this morning, with North Carolina taking the top spot. Texas A&M was ranked second, followed by Georgia, Ohio State, and NC State. The ITA bases their rankings off of accumulation of win and loss points, a win-loss record, strength of schedule, and depth of wins and losses.

The 'Jacks are on the road again this weekend, first heading to Idaho to take on the Vandals. They will then travel to Eastern Washington as they conclude their weekend of conference matchups.
