TUSCON, Ariz. (September 18, 2023) – Northern Arizona Men's Tennis began their fall campaign this weekend at Arizona's Wildcat Invite, finding quick success as the entire roster competed for the first time in the 2023-24 season.
The weekend tournament was attended by Arizona, Gonzaga, UNLV, New Mexico, and New Mexico State in addition to NAU. NAU picked up 14 singles victories and three doubles victories throughout the three-day tournament.
Dominik Buzonics began his senior year with a bang picking up a 6-3, 6-3 victory to Gonzaga's Matthew Hollingworth. Buznoics paired up with
Jakub Prachar in doubles play on day one, defeating UNLV's duo of Anton Ornberg and Aaron Bailey, 6-3. Buzonics went on to claim a 6-2, 6-4 win against Arizona's own Casper Christensen on day two.
In addition to Prachar's doubles victory with Buzonics, the newcomer found his first victory against New Mexico State's Henrik Lynum in a 6-0, 6-3 match. Prachar concluded the tournament with a 6-3, 6-2 victory to Gonzaga's Tom Dunlop.
Maikel De Boes began the tournament with a 6-3, 6-3 victory to UNLV's Dusan Rsovac. Day three of the invite, De Boes paired up with
Maciej Ziomber for doubles play against Patrick Lohmann and Vassanth Mathan where the duo picked up a 6-4 victory against the New Mexico State pairing. Ziomber also picked up a singles win on day two against New Mexico State's Tobias Wallin in 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 fashion.
Lance Urlaub made his Lumberjack debut, earning a 7-5, 6-3 victory to New Mexico State's Patrick Lohmann. Urlaub picked up another single win against Gonzaga's Tom Dunlop in a quick 6-0, 6-1 match.
Morgan Donovan earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory while facing Vassanth Mathan of New Mexico State to kick off his weekend. Donovan also earned a 7-5, 6-4 win against Gonzaga's Gus Krauel.
Piotr Galus and
Dani Torres teamed up to knock Gonzaga's duo of Dunlop and Krauel 6-4. Torres also earned a singles victory against New Mexico State's Gustavo Campos.
The Lumberjacks will now prepare for the ITA Mountain Regionals which are set to begin Sept. 28 and run through Oct. 2 as hosted by the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
