FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (September 27, 2023) – For the first time in the tenure of head coach Ewa Bogusz, the Northern Arizona Women's Tennis team opened its fall schedule in Flagstaff this past weekend, hosting the Lumberjack Classic tournament.
Four teams competed over the three days of action on the Northern Arizona campus: NAU, GCU, Tulsa and New Mexico.
Opening play on Friday saw the Lumberjacks sweep a pair of double matches against GCU.
The No. 1 doubles duo of junior Laura Duhl and sophomore Patrycja Niewiadomska came out unscathed in their first contest, winning easily by a score of 6-2. The second doubles pairing of Ana Karen Guadiana Campos and Daryna Shoshyna raced to a 6-1 victory.
While Northern Arizona had the edge in doubles on Friday, facing off with Tulsa in singles play, it would not transfer over.
The Lumberjacks received a pair of three set singles victories on Friday. One was a 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(1) win from Shoshyna, and the second came from senior Ava Neyestani.
After facing Tulsa in singles on Friday, the two schools would match up again on the doubles court on Saturday. Once again, the No. 1 team of Duhl and Niewiadomska would pick up another victory with another 6-2 scoreline.
With New Mexico winning the No. 2 doubles match, NAU got the upper hand taking two of the three doubles contests, with Neyestani and Dolavee Tumthong finishing off the Lobos in a tight 6-4 set.
Of the six singles matches against New Mexico on Saturday, the Lumberjacks would win four of them. Including victories from Niewiadomska at No. 1 singles, Guadiana Campos at No. 2 along with Shoshyna and Neyestani at No. 4 and 5 respectively.
During getaway day on Sunday, Northern Arizona for the first time in the tournament did not win a majority of its doubles matches. However, Duhl and Niewiadomska closed the weekend with a 3-0 mark in doubles play, with a more competitive 6-4 result.
In NAU's lone singles match on Sunday, Tumthong picked up her first singles victory as a Lumberjack, sawing off GCU's Dania Deaifi 6-4, 6-3.
Northern Arizona Women's Tennis will have a representative at the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, North Carolina this coming week in Patrycja Niewiadomska, who made it through pre-qualification.
