Box Score 2 TEMPE, Ariz. (January 12, 2024) – Northern Arizona Men's Tennis opened its 2024 spring season with a double dual against host Arizona State and Wichita State. The Lumberjacks split the two matchups, dropping the first affair with Arizona State 0-4 and sweeping Wichita State 4-0.
Against Wichita State, the Lumberjacks earned the doubles point, with junior Dani Torres and senior Maciej Ziomber issuing a bagel to Wichita State's No. 2 doubles team 6-0. NAU clinched the point following a 6-3 victory from No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Mikael De Boes and junior Piotr Galus took care of business in a 6-3 scoreline.
Singles play was also very kind to Northern Arizona against the Shockers, as Torres, in the second singles spot, defeated Misha Kvantaliani in a competitive straight-sets effort 7-6, 6-4. DeBoes in No. 4 singles did the same in a 6-2, 6-4 final.
Freshman Semen Agynskyy only dropped one game in a 6-1, 6-0 rout over Wichita State's Richie King in No. 6 singles.
It was a bit more challenging against the hometown Sun Devils. In No. 1 singles senior Dominik Buzonics fell in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to ASU's Murphy Cassone. In No. 2 singles, Max McKennon got the better of Torres 6-2, 6-2.
Other completed singles matches included No. 4 singles, in which Jacob Bullard defeated De Boes in straight sets.
In No. 6 singles, Agynskyy won the opening set and was on-serve in the second before his match ended without a final result.
Following ASU clinching the dual, the No. 2 doubles tandem of Torres and Ziomber closed out Arizona State's Bullard and Constantinos Koshis 6-4. No. 1 and No. 3 doubles fell by 1-6 and 5-7 scores, respectively.
The Lumberjacks will open their home slate of matches next week as they take on Western New Mexico at the NAU Tennis Center on Jan. 18. Match play will get underway at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
