CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. (January 27, 2024) – In the first-ever ITA Kickoff appearance for any Big Sky program, the Lumberjacks picked up a point against the No. 3 ranked Virginia Cavaliers as
Maciej Ziomber defeated his opponent in singles at the No. 6 position.
The Jacks had a solid day of strong play, starting on the doubles courts as
Dani Torres and Ziomber fell in a close match at 6-4 to Inaki Montes and Alexander Kiefer at the No. 2. Meanwhile
Piotr Galus and
Maikel De Boes kept close competition at the No. 3, going the distance with Douglas Yaffa and J VD Schulenburg in a 7-5 match to earn the doubles point for the Cavs. Although the No. 1 match of doubles play went unfinished
Dominik Buzonics and
Jakub Prachar were tied 6-6 with Virginia's top duo of Edoardo Graziani and James Hopper.
In singles play, Virginia took the first singles point at the No. 1 as Dylan Dietrich defeated NAU's Buzonics in a 6-2, 6-2 match. At the No. 5
Semen Agynskyy fell to Hopper in a 6-3, 6-0 match. Ziomber earned the Jacks a point at the No. 6 position 7-5, 6-4, defeating Ty Switzer in his first dual loss of the season. Closing out the match, Galus fell to Graziani 6-4, 6-3.
Against the No. 26 singles player Schulenburg, Torres held strong as the match went unfinished at 7-5, 6-6 at the No. 2.
Maikel De Boes took a lead of 6-5 as the match went unfinished after falling 6-1 in the first set.
The Lumberjacks will now take on Pennsylvania after the Quakers dropped to Florida Atlantic 4-3 in today's ITA Kickoff match. The match will begin at 10 a.m. MST. Penn is 1-2 on the season picking up their first win of the season at 4-0 against Furman. Penn's doubles team of Kian Vakili and Aaron Sandler were ranked No. 56 as a duo in the ITA's latest rankings.
