CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. (January 28, 2024) – NAU Tennis (3-3) will head back to Flagstaff following the completion of the Jacks first-ever ITA Kickoff Weekend after NAU fell to Pennsylvania this morning in a 4-1 consolation match.
Starting off with doubles competition, the point came down to the No. 1 court as Penn's doubles pairing and No. 56 ranked Aaron Sandler and Kian Vakili earned a 6-4 victory to NAU's
Maciej Ziomber and
Dani Torres. In similar fashion, the Jacks duo of
Piotr Galus and
Maikel De Boes picked up a 6-4 doubles victory of their own to Baylor Sai and Matthew Rutter.
As the doubles point came down to one final court at the No. 1,
Dominik Buzonics and
Jakub Prachar were in a battle with Manfredi Graziani and Zachery Lim, going the distance before falling 7-5 to give Penn its first point of the day ahead of singles play.
Torres evened things out with a convinving 6-1, 7-6 (7-0) victory at the No. 2 position, earning the win over Penn's Vakili and evening things out at 1-1 on the match. Looking to avenge his doubles loss to the Jacks, Sai quickly earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 over De Boes to reclaim the lead in the match at 2-1.
Maciej Ziomber dropped at the No. 6 in a 6-3, 6-0 match to Luka Butera, followed by
Piotr Galus falling at the No. 3 to Sandler in a 7-5, 6-1 loss while Penn claimed a 4-1 victory over the Lumberjacks.
