TEMPE, Ariz. (Oct. 12, 2024) - The Northern Arizona women's swimming and diving team competed in its first official meet of the 2024 season, battling against three in-state rivals - Arizona State, Arizona, and Grand Canyon. The Lumberjacks went 1-3, defeating GCU.
"Overall it was a great day of racing," head swimming coach Andy Johns said. "Bena, Elsa, Cydnie, Gracie, Casey, and Kylie led us in the pool. The divers dominated the boards, winning the team event, and we are looking forward to the next three weeks of preparation before hosting Idaho on Nov. 2nd."

The first event of the meet saw the A team of Gracie Munk, Cydnie Perkins, Elsa Musselman, and Bena Koehn record a 3:43.98 to place eighth. The 'Jacks B team of Lily Powell, Trelise Dance, Isahbel Krasht, and Katarina Klatt went 3:49.84 to place 11th. Followed by the C team, consisting of Jamie Dellwardt, Mariana Diaz-Ponce, Kaci Kelaher, and Helena Robla-Alvarez, who posted a time of 3:51.79 placing 13th.
Northern Arizona dominated the top of the leaderboard in the 1-meter diving, taking spots two through six and ninth. Victoria Knapp scored 291.30 to take second place, Grace Wesche scored 261.75 for third, Catalina Devia totaled 258.95 for fourth, Mackenna Stocker recorded 251.10 for fifth and Margaret Wesche scored 237.75 for the sixth spot. Kendall Marquez took ninth with 225.40. Northern Arizona's success on the 1-meter would win them the team diving event.
Casey Craffey led the Lumberjacks in the 600-yard freestyle with a time of 5:56.74, putting her in fourth. Kylie Ney finished one spot behind her with a time of 6:00.34. Craffey recorded a time of 2:56.36 for a 10th-place finish in the 300-yard free and Ney posted a time of 2:55.53 for eighth.Â
Koehn recorded a time of 1:21.84 in the 150-yard freestyle for eighth place and would place sixth in the 300-yard freestyle with a time of 2:54.65.Â
Munk, a junior, took on the 150-yard backstroke and placed fourth with a time of 1:28.13. She recorded a time of 26.38 for the seventh-place spot in the 50-yard backstroke. Â
Musselman took second place in the 150-yard butterfly with a time of 1:26.48. She also placed fifth with a time of 24.94 in the 50-yard butterfly and would lead the 'Jacks in the 100-yard IM with an eighth-place finish, recording 57.11.
Perkins recorded the fastest time for the Lumberjacks in the 150-yard breaststroke with 1:39.49 for fifth place. Diaz-Ponce took 10th place with 1:41.34.
In the final event, Northern Arizona's B team of Kelaher, Eggink, Robla-Alvarez and Watanabe posted a time of 1:37.47 in the 200-yard free relay for an eighth-place finish. One spot behind them was NAU's A team of Krasht, Powell, Klatt, and Koehn who recorded a time of 1:37.55 for ninth.
Northern Arizona will host Idaho in the Wall Aquatic Center on Nov. 2 at 10:30 a.m. Mountain Standard time.
