FAYETTEVILLE, Ar. (May 24, 2024) – The NAU track & field team saw four more national championship qualifying performances on the third day of competition at the NCAA West Regional.
Three NAU athletes from the 5,000-meter qualified for the NCAA National Championships, with
Cael Grotenhuis becoming a double qualifier.
Nico Young finished second in his heat, earning an automatic bid with a time of 13:48.44.
Brodey Hasty finished fourth in the same heat to also earn automatic qualification after running a time of 13:51.30. Grotenhuis ran a time of 13:50.59 to earn a bid to the national meet, becoming NAU's only double qualifier after already earning a spot at nationals in the 10,000-meter.
This is the second time in school history that the Lumberjacks have seen three qualifiers for the men's 5,000-meter. This previously occurred in 2019 when Hasty qualified for the national meet along with Geordie Beamish and Luis Grijalva.
Kang Nyoak also competed in the 10,000-meter, finishing 17
th overall with a time of 14:09.26.
Colin Sahlman earned a spot at the national meet in the 1,500-meter after finishing second in his heat with a time of 3:40.09.
Mitchell Effing finished 16
th overall in the triple jump with a mark of 15.52 meters.
