ST. GEORGE, Utah (Jan. 24, 2025) – The Northern Arizona University swimming team completed the first day of its dual meet against WAC rivals, Utah Tech.
"It was a good night of racing after a long day of travel," head swimming coach Andy Johns said. "There were some outstanding relay splits that bode well for how tomorrow might be. Utah Tech was definitely ready to compete tonight, and we are looking forward to the meet tomorrow."
The day featured six events, all relay races, in a closely contested matchup. The Lumberjacks narrowly fell short, scoring 46 points to the Trailblazers' 48.
In the second event, a 4x100 individual medley relay, each swimmer completed 25-yards of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. NAU's A team, composed of Cydnie Perkins, Elsa Musselman, Jamie Dellwardt, and Gracie Munk, claimed victory with a time of 3:54.19.
The 'Jacks also won the 300-yard breaststroke relay, with Trelise Dance, Mariana Diaz-Ponce, and Perkins posting a time of 3:10.23, defeating their competitors by three seconds.
The final race of the evening was a 500-yard freestyle relay divided into increments of 50-yards, 100-yards, 150-yards, and 200-yards. NAU's A team, consisting of Kokona Watanabe, Bena Koehn, Meropi Eggink, and Kylie Ney, finished in second place by one second with a time of 4:27.18.
The dual meet continues tomorrow, with events beginning at 11:00 a.m. Mountain Standard time.
