TUCSON, Ariz. (March 21, 2025) – The Northern Arizona track and field team opened the outdoor season today at the Willie Williams Classic, a two-day meet hosted by Arizona in Tucson, Ariz.
NAU had two event winners on the first day, with
Sariyah Horne-Kemp taking first in the hammer throw with a toss of 57.14.
Corey Gorgas also took first in the 1,500-meters with a time of 3:45.97.
Josiah Johnson also ran the fourth-fastest time in program history in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking 51.70.
The 'Jacks started the day with the field events, where
Desmond Lott took third in the hammer throw with a mark of 64.72-meters – a new personal best that ranks fifth all-time in program history. He finished the day with a third-place finish in the discus with a personal best toss of 55.56-meters which ranks sixth all-time.
In the high jump, a trio of Lumberjacks in
Carter Anderson,
Julian Moore and
Christian Mutengela all cleared 1.95-meters. Also representing NAU in the jumps were
Malachi Marshall and
Ian Lipsey who tied for fourth in the long jump after leaping 7.17-meters.
Shon Martin placed seventh in the long jump with a mark of 6.94-meters.
Brenna Rodriguez placed fourth in the long jump with a jump of 5.64-meters.
On the track,
Shanye Harris was the top finisher for the 'Jacks in the women's 200-meters, clocking 24.53.
Kyle Smith was the top finisher on the men's side in the 200-meters, crossing the line in 21.59.
LiNay Perry placed seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.74.
Also earning top five finishes in their respective events were
Jeret Gillingham in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (4
th, 8:59.81) and
Randy Espinoza in the 1,500-meters (3
rd, 3:50.12).
