POCATELLO, Idaho (February 27, 2026) – Northern Arizona opened competition Friday at the 2026 Big Sky Indoor Track & Field Championships and wasted no time taking control of the team race. After six scored events on each side, the Lumberjack men lead with 56 points, while the NAU women sit in first with 56.5 points heading into the final day of competition. From the first throws of the afternoon to the final relay of the night, the Lumberjacks built their lead event by event.
The day began in the weight throw rings and NAU immediately put points on the board. On the men's side, defending champion Desmond Lott captured the Big Sky title with a throw of 21.30 meters, setting the tone early. Nikolas Strait added a personal-best 19.81m for third, and Grant Wade finished seventh, giving the Lumberjacks three scorers in the event.
Moments later, the women matched that momentum. Ronan Gallagher finished runner-up with a personal-best 19.54 meters after having the lead through five throws, Sariyah Horne-Kemp placed third at 19.31 meters showing her consistency and drive for team points. Larissa Francois added a fifth-place finish with a massive final throw showing her talent here at the Big Sky Championships. Before a sprint had been run, NAU had already created separation in the team standings.
In the men's long jump, Justin Cardoza delivered a clutch performance, earning silver with a personal-best 7.69 meters. Shon Martin added an eighth-place finish, stacking more early points for the Lumberjacks.
As track events opened, NAU advanced key athletes into Saturday finals. Luke Yruretagoyena led all qualifiers in the men's 400 meters with a personal-best 47.39, while Nicolas Martinez also advanced to the final.
In the hurdles, Erick Reyes-Aguilera and Josiah Johnson both ran 8.02 in the men's 60-meter hurdles prelims to advance, and Sydnie Watkins moved through in the women's 60-meter hurdles with an 8.35 performance.
The middle-distance depth showed immediately in the 800 meters. On the women's side, Emma Stutzman (2:08.55 PB), Hayley Burns (2:08.75 PB) and Odessa Zentz (2:09.67) all qualified for the final.
The men followed with a statement of their own, advancing four athletes. Rheinhardt Harrison (1:50.85), Colin Sahlman (1:51.25), Tor Hotung-Davidsen (1:51.68) and Jonah Fearnley (1:52.07) claimed half of the championship field..
As evening settled in, the distance events shifted the meet beginning with the women's 5,000 meters. The Lumberjacks delivered a dominant 1–2 finish as Ava Mitchell claimed the Big Sky title in 16:46.49, with Payton Godsey crossing second in 16:48.96. Grace Copeland added a fourth-place finish, creating a powerful distance cushion in the team race and firmly positioning NAU atop the standings.
Moments later, the men followed suit. Manny Perez surged to the 5,000-meter title in 14:08.60 after late-race confusion altered the lead pack, staying composed and closing decisively over the final laps. Randy Espinoza (4th) and Derebe Ayele (5th) added critical team points, swinging the standings even further in Northern Arizona's favor.
The final events of the evening left no doubt about Northern Arizona's momentum. The women's distance medley relay (DMR) captured the conference title in 11:35.66. Emma Stutzman, Ariel Haygood, Odessa Zentz and Hayley Burns captured the conference title in 11:35.66! Minutes later, the men's DMR quartet of Kang Nyoak, Jase Weingart, Jonah Fearnley and Clayton Shively crossed first in 9:53.30 to complete the sweep. By the end of the night, Northern Arizona had built first-place positions on both sides of the standings.
Now the focus shifts to Saturday and the Lumberjacks are positioned for a title defense. Finals begin with the 60 meters and 200 meters, where NAU will look to convert qualifying performances into points. In the 400 meters, Luke Yruretagoyena enters as the top seed in the men's final (47.39), and Nicolas Martinez returns in scoring position. The 800-meter finals will be pivotal. The women place three athletes on the line. Burns, Stutzman and Zentz while the men control half the field with Harrison, Sahlman, Hotung-Davidsen and Fearnley.
The mile and 3,000 meters will test NAU's championship depth. In the men's mile final, Sahlman, Hotung-Davidsen, Harrison and Shively headline a loaded field. The men's 3,000 features Perez, Shively, Washburn, Nyoak, Ayele and Espinoza a championship-caliber lineup. The women's 3,000 final includes Burns, Mitchell, Copeland, Godsey and Stutzman, setting up another major scoring opportunity. The meet will close with the 4x400-meter relays, where both Northern Arizona squads enter with competitive seed times and depth across the sprint group
