The Lumberjacks have dropped three straight and will look to pick up momentum heading into the conference tournament, which begins Saturday in Boise, Idaho. With one game remaining in the regular season, NAU (10-20, 4-13 Big Sky) is locked into either the ninth or 10th place spots in the Big Sky Conference. NAU will face either Idaho State or Sacramento State on the opening day of the Big Sky Championships on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. MST.
NAU (10-20, 4-13 Big Sky) struggled on the road last week, dropping both of its games to Idaho, 78-58, and Eastern Washington, 88-57. It marked the first time this season that NAU was held to under 60 points in back-to-back games.
Fortunately for the Lumberjacks, they play their final game before the tournament at home where NAU is 9-6 this season. Three of NAU's four Big Sky victories occurred in the Walkup Skydome.
Chris Komin and
Diego Campisano has been the Lumberjacks' most consistent players over the last couple of weeks. Komin is averaging 16.8 points per game in his last four contests, while shooting 52.5% (21-of-40) from the field and 86.4% at the line (19-of-22). Campisano had his four-game double-digit scoring streak snapped on Saturday at Eastern Washington, but is still averaging 12.6 points per game over his last five games. Campisano is shooting 44.8% (13-of-29) behind the arc, with four double-digit scoring games during this stretch.
The Lumberjacks will look to avenge a 77-68 loss to Montana State back on Jan. 3 in Bozeman. Following the lengthy span between matchups, both teams will be missing key players since the first matchup.
Zack Davidson, the Lumberjacks' top player in terms of points per game has not played for NAU since the Montana State game on Jan. 3, while Davian Brown, Montana State's third-leading scorer, has not appeared in a game since Jan. 24.
NAU has won two consecutive head-to-head meetings against Montana State at home in the Skydome, but overall, the Bobcats have claimed eight wins in the last 10 meetings.
Montana State swept its final homestand of the regular season over the weekend, including victories of Portland State, 84-69, and Sacramento State, 82-61. Montana State (17-13) is tied with Eastern Washington for second-place in the standings at 11-6 in conference play. The two teams are one game behind Big Sky-leading Portland State entering the final day of the regular season.
Montana State, averaging 77.5 points per game in conference play, is one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the country. The Bobcats rank 39th and 42nd respectively in the country in 3-point percentage (.368) and 3-point makes per game (9.8). They are also 51st nationally with only 10.2 turnovers per game.
Jed Miller leads the Bobcats in scoring with 17.4 points per game in conference games and scored a team-high 22 points against NAU in early January. He is second in the Big Sky, in league play, in 3-point percentage (.407) and makes (2.8 per game). Christian King recorded 18 points and nine rebounds versus NAU last month. King is averaging 12.8 points per game in conference games.
