Box Score 2 LAFAYETTE, LA. (February 15, 2020) – Northern Arizona's men's tennis traveled to Louisiana this past Friday and Saturday for a two-day invite, hosted by the Ragin' Cajuns. The 'Jacks took on Louisiana Friday, taking a 0-4 loss into Saturday against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, where they finished 1-4.
Against Louisiana at Lafayette, 0-4
Duo
Daniel Dillon and
Joachim Schaefer finished first with a set score of 1-6 on their doubles court. Closely after, pair
Eban Straker-Meads and
Facundo Tumosa fell to UL with a 3-6 score, allowing the Cajuns to take the doubles point heading into singles matches.
Alex Groves and
Chris Steele held on in their match but did not finish at a close 4-5 score.
For singles, UL won on courts two, four and six over Tumosa, Steele, and Dillon, respectively. Dillon's match finished first after a single point set score of 1-6 and a 2-6 tally in the second. Steele completed his match next, going 2-6 and 0-6 in his sets. Louisiana clinched the match after Tumosa's loss of 3-6 and 2-6.
David Nguyen (7-6, 0-3, unf.), Straker-Meads (2-6, 1-5, unf.), and Groves (0-6, 4-3, unf.) were unable to finish their matches after the clinch.
Against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, 1-4
The 'Jacks faced the Islanders in a 1-4 finish Saturday morning, with Straker-Meads keeping the NAU from going scoreless. Straker-Meads took the first set quickly, with a 6-1 win over his opponent. In the second, he won 7-5.
In doubles, Steele and Groves were scoreless, giving the Islanders a 0-6 advantage to take the point. Doubles matches finished with Schaefer and Dillon going 1-6.
Unfortunately, Nguyen (0-6, 3-6), Steele (2-6, 0-6), and Groves (1-6, 5-7) fell on their singles courts for Corpus Christi to take the win over NAU.
Despite the loss, the Lumberjacks fought hard to make a comeback from Corpus Christi winning the doubles point. Both Tumosa and Dillon split their singles sets. Tumosa took the loss in his first, 3-6, but came back with a 6-4 tally. Unable to finish, Tumosa's last set ending with him serving, 5-2. Dillon faced a similar experience, falling in the first set, 5-7, but winning 6-4 in the second, and did not finish the match.
NAU continues their road swing next Saturday at their first Big Sky opponent, Portland State, next Saturday at 2 p.m.
