FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (February 16, 2021) – Now 5-1 overall in singles this season, freshman
Gina Dittmann was named the Big Sky Player of the Week by the conference Tuesday afternoon.
Playing at No. 1 for the fifth time this year, Dittmann beat Utah State's Carolina Millan 6-4, 6-3 as the Lumberjacks extended their home winning streak to 13 matches with a 5-2 victory against the Aggies on Saturday.
Millan entered the match 3-1 at No. 1 this season, only falling to Colorado while also knocking off a ranked opponent from Denver earlier in the year. Dittmann jumped ahead 3-0 in the first set and flipped a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 advantage early in the second.
Dittmann's only single loss this season came against Arizona State's Ilze Hattingh, who ranked No. 37 at the time of their match. Dittmann dropped the first set 7-5 before winning a tiebreaker at 6-6 in the second to force a deciding third set tiebreak. Trailing 6-3, Dittmann rallied back to trail 9-8 before ultimately losing 10-8.
The freshman also improved to 3-3 alongside
Elinor Beazley in doubles on Saturday as the pair recorded a 6-4 victory against Utah State's Annaliese County and Zara Ryan at the No. 2 doubles spot. Dittmann and Beazley's win evened the doubles score at 1-1 before the Lumberjacks locked up the point on Court 3.
The second Lumberjack to earn a Big Sky honor this season, Dittmann joins senior
Ellie Millard as NAU players who recorded their first conference player of the week award this season.
