Box Score 2 FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (January 18, 2024) – Not only did Northern Arizona Men's Tennis open their home slate of matches with two 7-0 victories over Western New Mexico, but they did so without dropping a set in each of the 18 matches contested.
"We were able to use all of the guys that were healthy in our lineup today," head coach Maciej Bogusz said. "It gave us the chance to mix it up a little bit in both singles and doubles. It was good to play all three freshmen and see everybody step up and play well this afternoon."
In the morning session, the Lumberjacks wasted no time in earning the doubles point with the No. 1 doubles tandem of Dominik Buzonics and Jakub Prachar, breezing past the Western New Mexico team in a 6-1 fashion.
Maciej Ziomber and Dani Torres won in the same fashion, wrapping up immediately following the No. 1 doubles victory with a 6-1 scoreline of their own. NAU swept the doubles contests with No. 3 coming out on top 6-4.
The 6-1 scorelines kept coming in the morning singles matches, with Lance Urlaub getting through easily against his equivalent from Western New Mexico, 6-1, 6-1. Maikel De Boes soon followed in No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-4. Piotr Galus recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win playing second singles.
Ziomber, at No. 4 singles in his lone singles contest of the day, went 6-3, 6-4.
No. 5 singles and No. 1 singles wound up being the two most contested singles affairs of the morning session. Prachar prevailed in No. 5 with a tight 7-5 opening set before cruising 6-2 in the second. Buzonics needed a tiebreak to finish off the second set in No. 1 singles, winning 6-4, 7-6(3).
It ended up not being the only tiebreak that Buzonics would need to win both of his matches today, as he would need to go the distance and then some to clinch his second singles victory of the day, doing so 6-1, 7-6(8).
"It was definitely a tough day," Buzonics said. "My opponent came up in the second set serving a lot better and put more pressure on me, so I am very happy to come through today."
Another breaker was needed to determine the afternoon No. 2 doubles winner, with De Boes and Galus escaping 7-6(2).
In the other seven matches in the afternoon session, Northern Arizona didn't surrender more than four games in each match en route to securing the victory.
Next up for Northern Arizona will be the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia, where they will first square off with Virginia on Jan. 27 before going up against either FAU or Penn.
