FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (January 26, 2024) – NAU track & field had a historic night on the road, highlighted by
Nico Young's collegiate record-breaking performance in Boston.
Nico Young shattered the collegiate 5,000-meter record, running a time of 12:57.14 at the John Thomas Terrier Classic. He bested Graham Blank's previously held record by nearly six seconds. Young's time is the first sub-13 minute 5K time in NCAA history.
Aaron Las Heras finished first in the unseeded men's 5K after running a personal best time of 13:16.68, putting him at third on NAU's all-time performance list.
Theo Quax was close behind in second with a time of 13:16.83, putting him at number four on NAU's all-time performance list.
Erik Le Roux also competed in the unseeded 5K, placing 25
th with a time of 14:14.01.
Colin Sahlman broke both the NAU and Big Sky record in the mile after running a time of 3:53.17.
Kang Nyoak placed 12
th with a personal best of 3:57.31 to put him at number five on NAU's all-time performance list. Sahlman and Nyoak also competed in the 3,000-meter, finishing ninth and 13
th respectively with times of 7:59.27 and 8:01.00.
Mitchell Effing was the sole NAU jumper at the New Mexico Team Open, winning the long jump with a mark of 7.81 meters.
Madeline Wilson was the lone NAU woman competing today, running the invitational 200-meter at the New Mexico Team Open. She finished third after running a time of 23.30.
In the unseeded men's 400-meter
Tyson Givens was the top Lumberjack finisher, placing 17
th with a time of 49.15.
Joshua Anderson was not far behind in 19
th place with a time of 49.27.
Cannon Booker finished 42
nd after running a time of 50.96.
The 'Jacks had three men in the unseeded 200-meter, with
Trenton Givens finishing 50
th after running a time of 22.18.
Khamis Hassan placed 57
th with a time of 22.26, while Booker placed 63
rd with a time of 22.44.
