PHOENIX, Ariz. (April 25, 2024) – Following the completion of the quarterfinals of the 2024 Big Sky Tennis Championships, the Jacks (16-6, 7-1) will now meet back up with the Weber State Wildcats (10-12, 5-3), looking to avenge the Jacks lone conference loss in the regular season.
Entering the tournament as the No. 1 seed, the Lumberjacks bring a 7-1 conference record as well after clinching a share of the regular season title with a 5-2 victory over the Idaho Vandals last weekend in Flagstaff. NAU finished the regular season on a five-match win streak with the Jacks only Big Sky loss coming in a 4-3 final at Weber State.
The Lumberjacks are looking to secure the team's first tournament championship since 2021 where NAU went back-to-back after a 2019 championship and the 2020 season was canceled due to COVID.
NAU rang in six All-Big Sky honors as announced by the conference on Wednesday afternoon.
Dani Torres was a unanimous first-team singles selection, followed by
Maikel De Boes as a first-team singles honoree,
Dominik Buzonics and
Jakub Prachar as a unanimous first-team doubles selection, Torres and Ziomber as a first-team doubles selection, Buzonics as an honorable mention singles honoree, and Ziomber also an honorable mention singles honoree.
Torres currently leads the Jacks through regular season singles play with a 12-3 record while primarily suiting up at the No. 2 position. Torres tabbed two Big Sky player of the week accolades this season for the Jacks and ended the season with the clinching point over Idaho to close out the season undefeated at home and lift the Jacks to their fifth-straight win which doubled as the Big Sky regular season championship clinching match.
The Wildcats are led by No. 6 player Tuan Minh who holds a 13-8 record for Weber State, while leading No. 1 Tristan Sarap holds a 7-13 record while primarily leading the top of the lineup.
The Cats are 30-28 in doubles play, a strong suit for WSU, as duo Minh and Matteo Savio lead the squad with a 13-6 overall doubles record while primarily playing at the No. 3. The duo is 4-2 in Big Sky play. Weber State had four postseason honors roll in as Minh, Savuo, Elyes Marouani and Sarap were all recognized with all-conference accolades this week.
