Conference and School Records Fall in Flagstaff and Boston for NAU Track and Field

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Jan. 31, 2025) –
Whether it was in the Skydome or out on the East coast, the Northern Arizona track and field team put on a show on Friday night. The Lumberjacks hosted their third of four regular season home meets, the Ron Mann Classic, tonight in Flagstaff, Ariz., and a handful of women distance runners raced at the BU John Thomas Terrier Invite in Boston, Mass.
 
In Boston, Alex Carlson and Elise Stearns broke Northern Arizona and Big Sky Conference records in the 3,000-meters and 5,000-meters, respectively. Back home in Flagstaff, freshman Sydnie Watkins broke NAU's all-time record in the 60-meter hurdles and the Lumberjacks set eight new all-time top ten marks and won 12 events.
 
The Northern Arizona women did damage in Boston, leaving with five new top ten marks and a two Big Sky Conference and Northern Arizona records. Carlson clocked 8:53.77 in the 3,000-meters in her first ever indoor race at that distance, finishing ninth. She breaks current teammate Alyson Churchill's previous Big Sky and school record. Agnes McTighe clocked a time of 8:59.68 which ranks third all-time, and the trio are the only Lumberjacks in program history to ever break nine minutes in the 3k.
 
Also in the 3,000-meters was Karrie Baloga who clocked a personal best of 9:06.69 which ranks fifth. Ava Mitchell (9:20.26) and Emma Stutzman (9:21.11) also ran new personal records.
 
In the 5,000-meters, Stearns took her Big Sky Conference and NAU program record back from teammate Ali Upshaw. She ran 15:21.43 to finish third overall, breaking her previous personal best of 15:33.74 – which was a Big Sky and NAU school record set in December of 2022. The record stood until December 7, 2023, when Upshaw ran 15:27.86 in Boston, setting a new conference and school record. The duo now ranks first and second all-time in program and conference history.
 
Before the 3k, Mitchell ran 4:40.91 in the mile which is good for 10th all-time. Baloga ran 4:41.51 in the event as well.
 
For the third-straight meet, Garret Bernt won the weight throw with a season best toss of 22.61-meters. Also finding success for the third-straight meet was Desmond Lott who placed second with a new personal best of 22.39-meters, which ranks second all-time in program history behind Bernt's school and conference record. Nikolas Strait also made the finals and placed fourth overall with a mark of 18.14-meters. Weight throw competition was rounded out by Grant Wade made it to the finals and placed ninth with a new personal best of 16.38-meters.
 
Lott also finished second in the shot put, tying his personal best with a mark of 17.32-meters which ranks eighth all-time in NAU history.
 
Sirr Butler won the men's triple jump with a mark of 14.66-meters in the finals.
 
Carter Anderson and Julian Moore were the top finishers in the high jump, both clearing 1.92 meters to finish third and fourth, respectively. Malachi Marshall leaped 6.93-meters in the long jump to place fourth.
 
Watkins advanced to the final of the women's 60-meter hurdles with a qualifying time of 8.73 to finish sixth. In the finals, she broke NAU's school record with a new personal best time of 8.44 seconds, finishing second overall but as the top collegian. Watkins broke Madeline Wilson's previous school record of 8.57 set in 2022.
 
Shanye Harris qualified for the finals in the women's 60-meter dash, clocking a qualifying time of 7.51. In the finals, she improved to 7.40 seconds for a new personal best that ranks sixth all-time in NAU history.
 
In the women's mile, the Lumberjacks finished first through fourth led by Alyson Churchill who ran a season best 4:42.14. Nikita Moore (4:51.21) and Kiki Vaughn (4:59.54) followed while Keira Moore ran a personal of 5:02.03 to round things out.
 
Churchill also won the women's 3,000-meters with a season best 9:37.76. The Lumberjacks claimed spots one through seven and also had a ninth-place finisher. Hayley Burns finished second in 9:42.89 for a new personal best and was followed by Alexis Kebbe who finished fourth in 9:47.59.
 
Kyairra Reigh and LiNay Perry put the competition away in the 400-meters, going first and second and finishing two seconds faster than the third-place finisher. Reigh clocked 54.06 while Perry ran 54.25.
 
Odessa Zentz won the 800-meters with a time of 2:14.42, while Taylor Jacobs crossed the line in 2:18.35 to finish sixth.
 
In the 200-meters, Harris won with a time of 24.45 for a new personal best and Watkins clocked a new personal best of 24.84 seconds to finish third.
 
The women's 4x400-meter relay team ended the competition on a high note, running 3:42.86 to rank seventh all-time in NAU history.
 
In their first-ever collegiate indoor 400-meters, Luke Yruretagoyena and Josiah Johnson each earned a spot on NAU's all-time top-ten list. Yruretagoyena clocked 47.44 to finish fifth and Johnson ran 47.70 to finish sixth. Their times now rank eighth and ninth all-time, respectively. Liam Gair finished seventh with a new personal best of 48.37.
 
Northern Arizona had two runners qualify for finals in the 60-meter hurdles in Shon Martin (8.13) and Tyson Givens (8.20). The two each improved their times in the finals, with Martin clocking 8.07 to finish second and Given placing third in 8.12 with a season best.
 
Lamar Smith (6.86) and Khamis Hassan (6.89) advanced to the finals of the men's 60-meter dash. Smith improved to 8.85 in the finals and finished fourth overall, but as the top collegian.
 
Smith then won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.76 and the next highest NAU finisher was Zachary Taylor who finished seventh in 22.48.
 
The men finished one, two, three in the mile led by Santiago Prosser with a season-best 4:09.89. Aidan Puffer followed in 4:12.06 and Zack Munson finished third in 4:20.02.
 
In the men's 3,000-meters, Puffer placed second with a time of 8:31.26. He was followed by Jeret Gillingham (8:34.80), Randy Espinoza (8:36.69), Cael Grotenhuis (8:39.31) and Munson (8:48.39).
 
Also on the track, the men's 4x400-meters ran 3:10.97 to win and clock the ninth-fastest time in NAU history.
 
Alexa Hamilton won the long jump with a new personal best of 5.63, clearing 18 feet in four out of six attempts. In her first-ever collegiate indoor long jump competition, Jaycie Spencer leaped 5.19-meters to finish ninth after making the finals.
 
Hamilton then turned around and set a new personal best in the high jump, clearing 1.65 meters which ties for sixth all-time at NAU. She finished third overall in the event.
 
Northern Arizona claimed the first three places in the women's weight throw, led by Sariyah Horne-Kemp with a season-best toss of 18.67-meters. Ronan Gallagher placed second with a throw of 16.98-meters, and Larissa Francois threw a personal best of 16.66-meters to finish third.
 
Francois made it to finals in the shot put where she placed eighth with a mark of 12.47 meters.
 
A handful of men's distance runners will keep the momentum going tomorrow afternoon at the John Thomas Terrier Invite in Boston, Mass. The rest of the squad will resume competition in Seattle, Wash., on Feb. 14-15 for the Husky Classic.
