FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (August 12, 2025) – Three days ahead of the 2025 Northern Arizona soccer season opener, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics
Uri Farkas is proud to announce a five-year contract extension for head soccer coach
Alan Berrios.
"
Alan Berrios has done a tremendous job leading our soccer program over the last three years and we are excited to lock him in for another five," Farkas said. "Under Alan's leadership, our soccer program is consistently a contender for the Big Sky Conference Championship, and along with the success on the field, his student-athletes have achieved high marks academically and continue to graduate at a high rate."
The 2025 season marks Berrios' third full campaign as NAU head coach after he took over as interim head coach in late September 2022. Berrios carries a 22-15-13 record into this season.
Berrios immediately put his stamp on the program in 2022, guiding the Lumberjacks to a 7-2-4 record as interim head coach. The team won its final seven regular season matches to win the Big Sky regular season title before ultimately claiming the program's fourth conference tournament championship. The 2022 season marked the first in which NAU won both the regular season and tournament championships in the same season.
After Berrios led the Lumberjacks to their fourth-ever NCAA Tournament appearance – and first since 2014 – he had the interim tag removed in December 2022.
"I would like to express my gratitude to President Dr. Jose Luis Cruz Rivera and Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics
Uri Farkas for their continued belief in me and unwavering support for our vision for NAU Soccer," Berrios said. "Uri is an outstanding leader, and I am eager to achieve our goals under his guidance.
"I also want to thank former Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Mike Marlow and Senior Associate Athletic Director
Syed Moinuddin for placing their trust in me back in 2022. I would be remiss not to mention Sports Administrator and Deputy Athletic Director
Alex Lais, whose support has been invaluable. Alex has made a remarkable impact on both me and our players since day one."
During the 2023 and 2024 seasons, Berrios coached a total of 11 players to All-Big Sky honors. Additionally,
Haylee Phoenix earned the Big Sky's Golden Boot award last season and Allie Larsen was voted Big Sky Defensive MVP in 2023.
NAU qualified for the conference tournament in both seasons, and the 2023 squad notched 11 victories, the program's most since their Big Sky Championship season in 2014.
Berrios first joined the NAU coaching staff in the spring of 2019 as an assistant coach before departing to be the head coach at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla. for the 2020 season. After guiding Southeastern to 17 wins and the NAIA quarterfinals, Berrios returned to Flagstaff as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator in 2021.
In between stints on the coaching staffs at Utah Tech (2018), University of Tampa (2010-14) and South Florida (2009), Berrios was the head women's coach at Arizona Christian from 2015-17, while simultaneously serving as the head men's coach his first two seasons. He departed Arizona Christian as the winningest women's soccer coach in program history.
"None of this would have been possible without my wife, Suzi Berrios, who has stood by me from the start of my coaching career. Her unwavering support has made this journey unforgettable," Berrios said. "I also want to thank our children – Devin, Brianna, Sydney and Chris as well as my parents, Maria and Jaun Berrios – for their love, support and encouragement."
