NAU Track & Field Finds Success Through Adversity

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Northern Arizona University's track & field team completed competition at the Sun Angel Track Classic. The Lumberjacks found a great deal of success this past weekend in the midst of the Tempe heat.
"It was a tough meet but a good meet," said director of track & field and cross country Eric Heins. "We accomplished a lot but with the delays and struggles, some handled it better than others. Overall looking at the results we had a lot of good marks come in. Hopefully this helps to build some momentum going forward."
Ashley Taylor continues to have an incredible freshman outdoor campaign while rewriting the NAU record books along the way. Taylor took fourth in the premiere women's 400m hurdles. The freshman ran a blazing 58.83, good for a new career-best and NAU school record.
Amanda Stricker also competed in the 400m hurdles, running a personal-best time of 1:04.36.
On the men's side, Vernon Jamison (52.82), Dai McFadden (52.87) and Chris Oestmann (54.9) all qualified for the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in the 400m hurdles. Jamison and Oestmann both posted new personal-bests in the event.
Jamison was not done there. The junior took second in the men's 110m with a time of 14.19, good for a new personal-best.
Alexis Clay contributed a solid performance in the women's 100m hurdles. Clay ran a personal-best time of 14.42 in the event, meeting the Big Sky qualification.
Darriel Banks competed in the 100m dash premiere event and was clocked at 11.76, second in her heat. Shamelle Pless also competed in a premiere event, running a 24.33 in the 200m dash. Pless also took third in the women's 100m dash with a time of 12.07.
Brianna Wilson represented NAU in both the 200m and 400m dash. Wilson qualified for the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in the 400m dash after sprinting to a 56.66 mark.
The NAU women's 4x100m relay team was impressive at the Sun Angel Track Classic. The group took first in their heat with a time of 46.34.
Taylor Schneider led the way for the NAU men's sprint group in the 200m dash. Schneider was clocked at a time of 21.83, good for fifth-best in the event. Also competing in the event was DeShon Norris (22.22), Cameron Coleman (22.24), Timothy Fisher (22.28), Jalen Mondane (22.68) and Michael Lyles (22.94).
Schneider also led the way in the men's 400m dash with a time of 48.18. Rounding out the group in that event was Lyles (48.92), Norris (48.99) and Coleman (49.07).
Tessie Edwards was NAU's top performer in the men's 100m dash posting a time of 11.17. Other contributors in the event were Fisher (11.27) and Mondane (11.45).
Lauren Laszczak was the top athlete in the women's high jump. The senior cleared a best of 5-09 (1.77m) on her first attempt, solidifying a first place finish in the event.
Deante Kemper took fourth in the men's high jump. Kemper cleared a best of 6-11 (2.11m) in Tempe.
Royal Black competed in the men's long jump, jumping a best of 20-03 (6.17m) in the first major outdoor meet of his collegiate career.
Clay took on a tough field in the premiere women's long jump event. Clay took fourth with a best mark of 19-0.75 (5.81m). Jade Childs also represented the Lumberjacks in the women's long jump. Childs' best mark was 18-07 (5.66m), garnering an eighth place finish and qualifying for the Big Sky Championships.
Courtney Brown was the lone Lumberjack to compete in the women's triple jump. Brown jumped a distance of 36-10 (11.24m) on the final day of competition.
Kylie Goo's fifth place finish was the top performance for NAU in the women's 800m run. Goo was clocked at 2:16.21 in the event. Also contributing was Carissa Gwerder (2:17.53), Melanie Zibrat (2:17.9) and Jamie Shrader (2:18.27).
Shayla Freeman placed fifth in the women's 1500m run thanks to a 4:42.81 effort.
On the men's side, Caleb Potts was NAU's top finisher in the 800m run. Potts ran a time of 1:53.17 good for ninth-best in the event. Matt League also competed running a time of 2:00.5.
Leading the way in the men's shot put was Shawn Collins who finished fifth in the event. Collins threw for a distance of 53-02.75 (16.22m). Also competing in the event was Micael Ljunberg who threw a distance of 52-01 (15.87m) and Margiotta who contributed a 51-02.25 (15.6m) performance.
Jessica Weise was the top shot putter on the women's side. Weise competed in the premiere women's shot put, throwing a best of 47-09 (14.55m) in the event. Lauren Stuart qualified for the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in the women's shot put. Stuart threw a best of 44-09 (13.64m) on the way to a fifth place finish
Julia Viberg took on some of the best in the nation in the premiere women's discus throw. Viberg took second in the event thanks to a 177-11 (54.23m) effort. The mark is a new career-best for the sophomore.
Sydney Leliefeld's performance garnered a third place finish in the event. Leliefeld posted a best of 132-01 (40.25m) in the event.
Margiotta and Collins also competed in the men's discus throw. The duo threw for best marks of 149-0 (45.42m) and 139-09 (42.61m), respectively.
