FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (August 4, 2020) – Joining the Lumberjacks after spending her first year of college in Germany,
Sofia Markova is the newest addition to the Northern Arizona University women's tennis program.
"I'm so excited about Sofia joining our team, she's such a strong addition to our program," Lumberjacks head coach
Ewa Bogusz said. "Germany has a really good tennis base and to reach top 80 in the country speaks for itself. She will definitely impact the lineup from the beginning."
Currently ranked 104th among women in Germany, Markova reached a national ranking as high as 78th during her career. Markova's youth career includes two appearances in the European Summer Cup for Team Germany, on the Under-14 team in 2014 and the Under-16 team in 2016. Markova also earned a runner-up finish in the German Outdoor Championships in the same two summers. Markova was also the Under-16 Bavarian Indoor Champion in 2016.
In 2017, Markova also finished as the runner-up in the Under-18 German Indoor Doubles Championship.
"We've connected with Sofia really well from the first conversation. She has a mindset that I really value and is a team player," Bogusz said. "I can't wait to see her thrive in the college environment."
Markova joins incoming freshmen
Ava Neyestani (Scottsdale, Arizona) and
Gina Dittmann (Essen, Germany), as well as transfer
Aleksandra Buczynska, as members of the Lumberjacks' 2020 recruiting class.
